Chicken Filling Puff Pastry (Easy Bakery-Style Snack)



If you’re looking for an easy, flaky snack that goes perfectly with tea, these Chicken Filling Puff Pastries are a must-try. They’re made with soft marinated chicken, creamy potato filling, melted cheese, and crispy puff pastry — all baked until golden and puffy.

This recipe is simple, beginner-friendly, and perfect for:

And the best part? It’s super easy and uses store-bought puff pastry.

Ingredients

For Chicken Filling

  • Chicken breast (cut into julienne strips)

  • Potatoes (cut into fries style)

  • Yogurt

  • Chicken tikka masala

  • Lemon juice

  • Oil (a little)

  • Butter (for cooking)

For Mixing

  • Ketchup (a little)

  • Mayonnaise (a little)

For Puff Pastry

  • Ready-made puff pastry sheets (I used Lidl pastry dough)

  • Mozzarella cheese (shredded)

  • Cheddar cheese (shredded)

  • Jalapeños (1 slice per pastry)

For Topping

  • 1 egg (whisked, for egg wash)

  • Kalonji (nigella seeds)

Marination

In a bowl, add yogurt, chicken tikka masala, lemon juice, and a little oil.
Add the chicken strips and potato fries. Mix well so everything is evenly coated.

Cover and marinate for at least 30 minutes (1 hour if possible for best flavor).

Cooking the Filling

Grease a pan with butter and add the marinated chicken and potatoes.
Cook on medium heat, stirring occasionally.

Let the mixture cook until:

  • all water dries up

  • chicken and potatoes are fully cooked

  • gravy starts sticking to the chicken

Remove from heat.

Shred the chicken using forks and lightly mash the potatoes.
Add a little ketchup and mayonnaise to keep the filling moist and creamy (this step prevents dryness).

Mix well and set aside.

Assembling the Puff Pastries

  1. Take the puff pastry sheet and cut it vertically into equal strips.

  2. Make one horizontal cut in the center, giving 8 rectangles.

  3. Place the filling on one side of each rectangle.

  4. Add shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheese on top.

  5. Place one jalapeño slice on each.

  6. Fold the empty side over to form a square.

  7. Use a fork to seal and design the edges on three sides.

Egg Wash & Baking

Whisk one egg and brush it over each pastry.
Sprinkle kalonji on top.

Preheat oven to 200°C.
Bake for 10–15 minutes, or until:

  • pastries puff up

  • tops turn golden brown

Remove from oven and let them cool slightly.

Serving

Serve hot with:

  • tea

  • ketchup

  • mayonnaise

  • chili garlic sauce

These puff pastries are crispy outside, soft inside, and packed with flavor.

Some ingredients used in this recipe may not be available in every regular grocery store, but they are easy to find with a little guidance.

Puff Pastry:

I used ready-made puff pastry dough from Lidl, which works perfectly and saves a lot of time. You can also find puff pastry sheets in Aldi, Rewe, or any major supermarket. Homemade puff pastry can be used, but store-bought is the easiest option.


Chicken Tikka Masala:

Chicken tikka masala spice mix is usually available at:

  • Asian or Pakistani/Indian grocery stores

  • International food sections in large supermarkets

If you can’t find it, you can substitute with a mix of paprika, cumin, coriander, garam masala, and chili powder.



Cheese & Extras:

Mozzarella, cheddar, mayonnaise, ketchup, and jalapeños are easily available in most supermarkets.
